A mechanical device that allows continuous linear or rotary motion in only one direction and prevents motion in the opposite direction. It consists of a round gear or linear rack with teeth and a pivoting, spring-loaded finger called a pawl that engages the teeth. The pawl limits backward motion to a distance equal to the spacing between the teeth. A ratchet may have a fixed or removable handle. It can have both SAE and metric sockets, and may also include extension drives that fit between the ratchet and socket to reach fasteners in tight spaces. Some have a wobble feature that lets you pivot the drive-end handle for a wider range of working angles.

Sockets are available in shallow, low-profile designs that fit tight spaces or deep, wide-thread styles to grip recessed bolt heads. Some are rated for a maximum amount of torque, indicated by a color-coded symbol on the socket and ratchet handle. Universal sockets work with different fastener types and have a larger capacity than standard ones. Pass-thru sockets let you use a ratchet to loosen and tighten spark plugs.
